TRANSITION TRAINING

February 17-19 in Santa Rosa

This will be the first Transition Training in Northern California in more than one year. These trainings are not only effective for Initiating Group members of new Transition Initiatives just starting out, but also for more experienced Transition participants interested in experiencing a full emersion “refresher” in the Transition model.

TRANSITION REGIONAL CONFERENCE

Transition Sebastopol folk are spearheading a regional conference for northern California Transition groups. The first planning meeting for this conference will be via telephone Feb 1. If you are a member of Transition Mill Valley and would like to participate in planning this conference, register for the call by following this link.

Living Cultures:

Make your own Sauerkraut and Kombucha!

January 29, 2:00 – 4:30 PM

Fermenting your own vegetables is delicious, easy, and safe, not to mention phenomenally nutritious. In this hands-on workshop we will go over the historical importance of fermentation, review the health benefits of cultured

foods, and cover fundamental

techniques for fermenting vegetables and kombucha. We will also taste delicious examples of fermented foods.

Join us to connect with your food on a microscopic level and take part in an ancient tradition of food preservation.

You will leave the workshop with:

* hands-on experience and clear information on how to safely and easily ferment foods at home;

* an overview of the history and health benefits of fermented foods;

* a jar of your own fresh-made sauerkraut.

We won’t be too messy, but bring an apron or suitable clothes, as well as a cutting board and a good knife for chopping.

CLIMATE CHANGE POTLUCK AT GROW

GROW Art & Garden is hosting a potluck community Christmas party Friday, December 9, 6:30-8:30, to share information on the global sustainability movement following the conclusion of the official UN Climate Negotiations in Durban, SA.

Ring in the holiday season with environmentalist and Congressional candidate Norman Solomon, Ecoequity’s Tom Athanasiou, Claire Greensfelder of Conversations with the Earth: Indigenous Voices on Climate Change); Doug Grandt of 350.org; and representatives from Transition Mill Valley.

In January, we’ll organize book clusters for people who want to study this book in a small group. Let us know if you’d like to take part in one of these book groups. The Transition Companion looks in detail at the process a community in transition goes through, calling on the experience of those who have already embarked on this journey.

Just in case you missed Under One Sky, a great event Transition Mill Valley hosted at the Throckmorton Theatre this fall, you can watch the video here. Under One Sky included a presentation from John Wick of the Marin Carbon Project, and a conversation with Helge Hellberg of An Organic Conversation, and Raven Gray of Transition US, facilitated by KPFA’s Brian Edwards-Tiekert. With special musical guests Jon Fromer and Francisco Herrera. Big thanks to volunteers from the Community Media Center of Marin who came out to film.

Changing Our Relationship to Waste

Join us for an evening of art, food, and conversation about waste in our culture, how it affects us, and what we can do about it. With slideshow presentations and a panel discussion, facilitated by Andy Peri, founding member of Green Sangha.

Special Guests:

Richard Lang and Judith Selby-Lang—Beach Plastic

Since 1999, Judith Selby Lang and Richard Lang have gathered plastic debris from Kehoe Beach, a remote stretch of the Point Reyes National Seashore, carrying the plastic away by the bagful. They combine their love of nature with their interest in science to produce an ongoing series of art works about the oceans and the environment.

Bea Johnson—The Zero Waste Home

Bea Johnson and her family strive to live a Zero Waste lifestyle. Recently featured on the Today Show and Sunset magazine, she has appeared in several newspapers, radio shows, corporate events and university lectures. Through her blog, the Zero Waste Home, she shares waste reducing tips and inspires a growing international community to take a stance on needless waste and lead zero-waste lifestyles.

Carrie Bachelder—The Away Station

As an environmental entrepreneur and businesswoman in Marin County, Carrie has witnessed firsthand the lack of recycling and reuse infrastructure, at both the household and construction levels. Through her moving company, Great Moves, she was often confronted with the problem of discarding goods and materials in a responsible way. She began to envision a “one-stop shop” that would handle such goods, many of which were high-value. It was through this vision and her determination that The Away Station came into existence.

Andy Peri—Founding member of Green Sangha

Andy was a founding member of Green Sangha, a spiritually-based environmental activist organization. It was there that he and Stuart Moody founded the Rethinking Plastics/Zero Waste campaign. Andy worked with local Fairfax businesses, the community and the Town Council of Fairfax to get Marin’s first plastic bag ban passed. He worked with the late Marin County Supervisor Charles McGlashan to expand this effort countywide and continues to do so. Professionally, he has worked in several fields of environmental protection, and has lectured and taught geography at San Francisco State University and the College of Marin. He is also the Advocacy Director of the Marin County Bicycle Coalition.
